I'm just trying to pretend I've actually been doing something.

Over at GORILLA ARTFARE there's been a small but rad trend of colouring in some lines that Clo posted, check mine out here!

Snatching bits of time on this here and there in work - it's at the stage I like to call 'a giant mess'.

nothing new

found these guys and kind of liked it. Think it must be from a couple of years ago, just before I started this blog - 2007!

it's voodoo-hoo-oo

This is from way back in, like, February. I was always kind of disappointed with this illustration, it had such great potential (phantoms! animal transformation! new orleans! smoke! magic!) and then just fell short of the mark. I'm cool with sharing it though, it's not like its completely terrible or anything.

This post from 04/02/09 contains a pencil drawing from it, if you are interested in such things.

I've been recycling old work and making it appear shiny and new. I was aiming for rainbows but they didn't really happen.

Was feeling unstimulated by rectangles at work. It's a bit derivative.

Another section of what I posted yesterday. Does anyone else get obsessed with the castling move in chess and consider a game 'won' if they do it?

Wednesday, 7 October 2009

This is a small section of something I've been sneakily working on at work when I can't face what I'm supposed to be doing. Actually I just want to take advantage of my hot new pc. Going home at 5 every day to my aging laptop is so bittersweet now.

I've been playing Professor Layton recently, it's totally influencing my colour scheme.

racer and his horse

I should stop posting stuff like this, or no one will ever hire me again!

I have spent some time getting to know cghub today, my name on there is predictably alice

I didn't really want to post this emo looking study on its own, but it's all I've got to show, so have it. It was to work out some lighting for something else entirely (the something else is work related and un-bloggable). Sometimes I find it useful to make a quick drawing completely unrelated to what I am working on to figure out shapes/atmosphere/colours/lighting, it removes the pressure, helps me loosen up, and is an excuse to work on something fun. Sometimes those drawings turn out nicely, sometimes they turn into sad emo soldier in the rain.

dirty sunday sketch

posted over at Gorilla Artfare for the DIRTY SUNDAY theme: some light vector nudity

Air guitar was accidental.

I have to learn how to use illustrator and it is not going well. Since I am an illustrator and it's an industry standard I think I should probably have learned how to use it earlier, but I put it off until absolutely necessary. I am immensely enjoying making swooshy lines with the calligraphy brush tool though.

the internets

So you know, maybe blogger isn't your preferred method of digesting information. Or you just like to spread yourself over the internet. Or you REALLY want to stalk me. Either way, I am now available to stare at on twitter and flickr. There may be content, but I cannot guarantee it's quality. I've started uploading photos of work and stuff to flickr and I'm considering inflicting some of my other ...uhhh let's call it "photography" on the world. I have no idea what to do with twitter but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

You probably weren't, but in case you were wondering: that photo was taken at the airport in Ljubljana. There were other equally awesome neon signs but I ran out of film after taking this one, which was my personal favourite. The view would have been immense if the clouds had had the decency to get lost.

pride and prejudice final

The deadline has hit but I still want to work on this some more, get some nice regency furniture going on in the background and refine everything a lot more (and make darcy stand in a less boring manner). But for now, here's the finished thing.

bennet vs darcy

Finally, some personal work! For character of the week. I need to make Elizabeth look less dopey I reckon.

insert frustrated cry of rage here

ugh ugh ugh, I have too much work and it's way too warm to be doing any of it.

ALSO: how the hell is it July already?!

hat girl

Can I still copy from a photograph? Yes I can. Quick painting study to take a break from colouring in.

Here are some snippets of work that I've been doing lately.

making ghosts fin

Yo yo. Well I finished this a while ago but I wasn't particularly thrilled by it... but now it's been done for a month or two I can look back with nostalgic fondness. Look at what I did, all that time ago.

crazy about ballerinas part two

Whats going on with those crazy pants!? I'm meant to be going out later but now I really want to stay in and colour this in. Nerd.

I have plans for this that involve paint. Right now I am jobless so I'm trying new things and all that.

Saturday, 14 March 2009

Just finished that root drawing illustration. These guys are so small I'm not even sure why I bothered putting them in, so I am sharing them here.

i'm going to start a fire

I'm having a good moment: drinking lapsang souchong, eating homemade flapjacks and avocado (not together, that would be weird) and listening to Wolf People. So have a small section of something I've been working on, and a warm up drawing from yesterday (ref from KOS)

I feel like this is proof I maybe need to get out more.

messy drawing

I'm never really sure if I should clean up drawings for the blog. Leaving them all messy with scan shadows and dust and partly erased lines seems more accurate - that is what they look like, and its supposed to be about process here I guess. But then cleaning them up would make them into a piece of work in their own right.

I need to loosen up, or I'm going to start spending all my spare time sharpening pencils.

In other news, today I have been mostly listening to Kitsune Noir mixtapes.

something old - polysics gig poster

Here is something I found on my old laptop, I guess it must be from about two years ago maybe (when Polysics last played Liverpool, I guess). I was asked by the promoter to make a quick poster for the show. The poster itself was uh... well let's just say the design was a little bit lacking, but I was quite happy with the illustration I whipped up for it. Thought it deserved another little go in the spotlight, I don't recall posting it anywhere online (and now I can forget all about it again). Only the top part was actually used, since the line-up was changed from just two bands to four (the guys at the bottom are my good friends Avenging Force).

Here is a part of some work in progress. The proportions are a bit funky but I think it is okay, it is meant to look a bit odd. It's part of a larger piece anyway.

I am becoming increasingly convinced that my wacom tablet does not work when it is cold.

Monday, 19 January 2009

So I often think to myself that it would be really cool if I could draw with ink without it being a total horrid mess. Sometimes after thinking this I force myself to sit down with a brush and a little pot of ink and go for it. Then I have to use a lot of photoshop to save it.

Sunday, 18 January 2009

It's been a little while! I just finished this, pretty much so I had something to post. Study from a photograph (I think that is pretty obvious!) I found on my computer. Not sure who the photographer or model is - it is from before I started accurately naming the stuff in my inspiration folder. Learnt absolutely nothing, except that it is fun to sit down for an hour and copy from a photo. Oh, and drawing hair is fun too.

ETA: Ref from here. Original photo is one million times nicer than my speedy painting.
